Shallow Wells

These can be ‘hand dug’ to depths of up to 60 feet or if we use our Drilling Rig up to 60 metres can be achieved.  With the addition of a hand or petrol pump clean water can be provided for humans, animals and for irrigation of crops.  Due to ongoing maintenance issues a hand pump is usually provided.

The picture on the left shows our Drilling Rig in use.

Oldonyo Shallow Well [Milimani Community Water Project]

This shallow well was funded by KDDT[UK] and was formally opened on the 23rd April 2005 (see pictures below).  The site for the well was found using our water survey equipment and then dug to a depth of 31m using the our Drilling Rig.

All of the local community were involved and they contributed 40,000 Ksh towards the costs of the project as well as additional practical.  A hand pump was also provided.  Prior to KDDT[UK] involvement there had been a number of attempts to collect/find water with not much success.

The picture on the left below shows the vegetable garden the community have planted alongside the shallow well.

It is watered by the ‘run off’ water from the hand pump.  Thus no water is wasted.  The provision of this shallow well & hand pump draws many people from the surrounding area to use it.

Shallow Well at Karamiae.

This was a joint project sponsored by the Intermediate Technology Group (ITDG) in Magadi and KDDT[UK].  Monies provided by KDDT[UK] were given by Mr Mahoney, photographer from Sittingbourne, Kent, England.

These pictures were taken in November 2002.

Kilkuria Shallow Well (Olyiangalani area).

This was for community and Kilkuria Feeder School use.  Drilled to a depth of 36m and a Afridev pump has been installed.  Costs shared MAAP – 45% and KDDT[UK] – 55%

Water Tanks.

Ferro Cement Tanks are reinforced concrete tanks for harvesting water from roofs or storing water pumped from water catchments.  These can be above or below ground level.  They offer large storage capacity from 2,000 to 20,000 gallons but need a lot of water to construct properly.  These cost from £1,500 to build.  If it dies not rain they do not fill up.  The picture on the right shows a tank used for storing water from a catchment area.  A tank like this was constructed in the Oloilalei area.

Plastic Tanks are used to harvest rain water from roofs of existing buildings or incorporated into new projects.  They are generally installed on a 50/50 cost share basis with the recipients.  They are relatively inexpensive at approximately £150 for a 500 gallon tank.  They are easy to transport and install but of no use at all if it does not rain.  See the picture on the right.  This was installed at Ilmao School.

In early 2009 plastic water tanks were installed at:

   ●   a small school at Oldupai.                              ●   a Primary school at Kirkouria.

   ●   a Nursery school at Nalepo Isinya.                 ●   a Primary School at Oiti.

   ●   a small Nursery School at Nalepo Bisil.           ●   a Primary school at Ilmolian.

See report from Project Directors visit to Kenya in Jan/Feb 2009 for more details - click here.

In 2010 a large plastic water tank, together with roof gutters and pipes, was installed at Enchorro Esenteu Primary School.
